The product line: biology as a process

OrCel is the cartilage equivalent. For patients with knee or ankle damage from injury or osteoarthritis, clinicians biopsy healthy cartilage, Vericel expands the cells, and the company produces a implant that can be surgically placed into the defect. How the economics work

These products generate revenue in a very different pattern than typical pharmaceuticals. Each graft is made to order, from the individual patient’s tissue. That means no inventory, no batch production, no economies of scale in the way pill manufacturing has them. Instead, revenue scales with the number of patient treatments the company processes.
