This synthetic approach allows the fund to be dynamic and cost-effective, but it also introduces complexity, daily rebalancing mechanics, and the potential for tracking differences that would not occur with a straightforward bond-ETF structure.

From bonds to futures: how TYA works

Rather than buying and holding Treasury bonds, TYA takes positions in Treasury futures traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Futures are contracts that obligate the buyer to take delivery of a bond (or in practice, to settle in cash) at a specified future date. By rolling from one contract month to the next — selling the near-term contract and buying the next-month one — the fund maintains an ongoing exposure to intermediate Treasuries without actually owning any bonds. This is a standard technique used by professional money managers and is the foundation of many commodity and index-tracking strategies.

The appeal is efficiency. A Treasury futures position requires far less capital upfront than buying the equivalent amount of actual bonds, so TYA can be more nimble and lower-cost to operate. The fund rebalances daily to maintain a specific duration target — the sensitivity to interest-rate moves. The expense ratio reflects the lower cost of trading futures rather than individual bonds.

Costs and the roll yield

The core expense ratio is typically 0.25–0.35 per cent per year, moderately cheap for fixed-income exposure but higher than the absolute cheapest Treasury ETFs (which cost under 0.05 per cent). However, there is an additional cost: the roll yield. When the fund sells a near-term futures contract and buys a far-term one, the price difference is the cost of “rolling.” In a normal yield curve (where longer-term bonds pay higher yields), rolling means selling at a lower price and buying at a higher price — a recurring cost. Conversely, if the curve inverts (short-term yields above long-term), rolling becomes a source of return. Over a typical year, roll costs or benefits can range from a few basis points to 1 per cent depending on the shape of the yield curve.

This hidden roll cost is why a futures-based Treasury fund can underperform an equally simple bond-based Treasury ETF — not because of higher management fees, but because of the mechanical cost of rolling contracts. An investor holding TYA for years should expect this drag to eat into total returns relative to owning actual bonds.

Liquidity and daily rebalancing

Treasury futures are highly liquid — billions of dollars trade each day — so the fund can execute its daily rebalancing without friction. That liquidity is a genuine advantage over trying to trade actual Treasury bonds, which are less actively traded. However, the daily rebalancing introduces the same volatility-decay dynamics as other daily-reset leveraged products: if intermediate-rate Treasuries are volatile on a day-to-day basis (which they are, particularly around Fed announcements and economic data), the constant rebalancing will cost performance over long periods. TYA is a less extreme version of volatility decay than a 2X leveraged ETF, but the mechanics are similar.

Interest-rate sensitivity and the path to returns

TYA’s returns come from two sources: the yield on the underlying Treasury exposure (income) and mark-to-market gains or losses as interest rates move (price). If rates fall, Treasury prices rise and TYA’s share price rises. If rates rise, prices fall. The fund’s duration — typically in the 4–6 year range for intermediate Treasuries — means a 1 per cent move in interest rates translates to roughly a 4–6 per cent move in share price. That is meaningful but manageable compared to longer-duration bond funds.

The income yield follows the Treasury curve. When 5-year Treasuries yield 4 per cent, TYA’s distribution will be roughly 4 per cent per year (less fees), paid quarterly. That yield is the main reason to hold the fund; for price appreciation, you would need rates to fall.

When TYA makes sense; when it doesn’t

TYA is most useful for investors who want intermediate-Treasury exposure but have some reason to prefer futures-based construction — perhaps they are using it in a dynamic allocation that rebalances frequently, or they have strong views on the roll yield based on yield-curve expectations. For most buy-and-hold investors, a straight Treasury ETF that owns actual bonds is simpler and avoids the roll cost. There is no real advantage to the futures structure unless you are actively trading or have a short-term tactical thesis.

The fund is not appropriate for investors seeking stable, transparent income. The daily rebalancing adds noise. The roll yield is an invisible cost that will confuse some holders. And the documentation is more complex than a traditional bond ETF.

The supply chain into intermediate Treasuries

TYA depends on the Treasury market itself — the ability to trade Treasury futures on the CME, which in turn requires a functioning secondary market in actual Treasury bonds. That market depends on dealers, the Federal Reserve’s operational framework, and the confidence of Treasury holders. Large disruptions to the Treasury market (rare but historically real) would ripple through TYA as sharply as any other Treasury exposure. The advantage of a futures-based fund — that it requires less capital — is not an advantage in a market stress; it is indistinguishable from any other Treasury holding.

How to research TYA

Start with Simplify’s fact sheet and prospectus. Understand the fund’s duration target and the yield-curve assumptions embedded in its construction. Watch the Treasury yield curve and think about whether you expect rates to rise or fall — rising rates will hurt TYA’s price, falling rates will help. Compare TYA’s rolling one-year return to a traditional Treasury ETF with similar duration; if TYA is consistently underperforming by more than the difference in stated expense ratios, roll costs are hurting performance. Finally, ask yourself whether you have a reason to prefer a futures-based Treasury tracker over a conventional one. If the answer is no, a simpler bond-based ETF will serve you just as well with less cognitive overhead.
