ProShares UltraPro Short 20 Year Treasury (TTT)
TTT is a leverage-amplified short position on 20-year US Treasury bonds. For every 1% that the 20-year Treasury index falls in price, TTT aims to rise 3%; for every 1% the index rises, TTT aims to fall 3%. It is not an investment for passivity — the daily reset mechanism means its value compounds in ways that diverge sharply from the simple inverse of the bond index over holding periods longer than a few weeks. It exists for tactical, short-term bets that long-term interest rates will spike.
The structure and the daily reset trap
ProShares uses derivatives — futures and swaps — to achieve the 3x inverse daily return. At the end of each trading day, the fund rebalances its positions to re-establish a 3x short exposure. This daily reset mechanism is the mechanism’s ace card for traders making intraday or week-long bets, because it guarantees the daily return relationship. It is the mechanism’s curse for longer-term holders, because compounding works against them.
Example: suppose the 20-year Treasury index is flat for two weeks, oscillating +1% and −1% each day. A simple short position or a non-leveraged inverse fund would track very close to flat. TTT, because it resets daily and the oscillations compound, ends that period down substantially — the daily gains and losses do not cancel. This is called volatility decay, and it is particularly brutal in range-bound markets where nothing moves but everything bounces.
The expense ratio is steep — among the highest in the leveraged-inverse space — reflecting the costs of maintaining the derivative overlay. The fund is illiquid compared to major vanilla bond funds, meaning a large position will move the market and execution costs can be material.
What interest-rate environment favors a TTT position?
A sharp rise in long-term interest rates — driven by expectations of higher inflation, a shift in Federal Reserve policy, or a collapse in demand for long-dated bonds — moves 20-year bond prices down and TTT up. The classic catalyst is a “long end tantrum,” when the market suddenly reprices its expectation of where Treasury yields should be. In 2022, for example, the 20-year yield rose sharply when it became clear the Fed would hike rates aggressively; a TTT position held then would have appreciated significantly. Conversely, if rates fall or flatten (as they did in 2023), TTT suffers outsized losses.
The asymmetry of the bet
Because TTT is a leveraged short, its downside is theoretically unlimited — if the 20-year yield collapses and 20-year bond prices soar, TTT can lose far more than 100% of the original investment. That catastrophic-loss scenario is theoretically possible but practically distant, because Treasury yields have hard floors (they cannot go negative indefinitely, and yields on US debt cannot move to historic extremes without sovereign-credit crisis), and investors usually exit long-short positions before total wipeout. Still, the asymmetry is real, and holding TTT is a bet with a known, bounded upside and an unbounded downside if the market moves far enough against the position.
Suitability and time horizon
TTT is a tactical trading instrument, not a portfolio building block or a hedge for long-term bond investors. The expense ratio, the volatility decay, and the leverage all work against buy-and-hold investors. A trader expecting a rapid rise in long-term rates over days to weeks, and willing to monitor the position and exit if the thesis breaks, might use TTT for that specific, time-limited bet. A pension fund or an individual building a diversified portfolio has no business holding TTT for the long term; a non-leveraged short (like PST, ProShares Short 20 Year Treasury, if a simple 1x short is desired) or a Treasury put option is more appropriate if the goal is lasting interest-rate hedge.
How to evaluate a TTT position
Understand first what “20-year Treasury” means — the maturity spectrum of US government bonds, with interest-rate risk concentrated at the long end. Check the fund’s underlying index (ProShares publishes this) and verify the current duration profile — how sensitive the fund is to a 1% change in yields. Monitor the daily performance reported by ProShares and compare it against the stated 3x inverse target to verify the fund is meeting its mechanics. Calculate the decay-cost empirically: if you are considering a multi-week hold, estimate the daily volatility of the 20-year Treasury index and rough the compounding cost; a market that is highly volatile and range-bound will exact a larger decay cost than a market moving steadily in one direction. Finally, understand the regulatory and tax consequences — leveraged inverse funds can be complex to hold in taxable accounts, and the daily turnover generates frequent taxable events.
