ProShares Short 20+ Year Treasury (TBF)
TBF is an exchange-traded fund that moves opposite to the price of long-term U.S. Treasury bonds, making it a way for investors to bet against or hedge long Treasury exposure.
The core strategy: simple inversion
Most ETFs rise when their underlying asset rises. TBF does the opposite. When the ICE U.S. Treasury 20+ Year Bond Index falls 1 percent, TBF aims to gain roughly 1 percent (before fees). When the index rises 1 percent, TBF loses roughly 1 percent. This inverse relationship is achieved through futures contracts, swap agreements, and other derivatives that short the Treasury market, all bundled into a daily-rebalancing ETF wrapper that ordinary investors can buy and sell on the stock exchange like any other fund.
Who uses TBF and why
The typical users fall into three categories. The first is a tactical trader who expects short-term Treasury yields to rise — perhaps because the Federal Reserve is about to signal further rate hikes — and wants a simple position that profits from falling bond prices without bothering with Treasury futures accounts or complex securities. The second is a large bond-heavy portfolio manager who wants to hedge long Treasury risk: if 80 percent of a fund is invested in long bonds, owning TBF in the remaining 20 percent can act as a portfolio shock absorber, offsetting losses on the bond side if rates spike. The third is a rare contrarian who genuinely believes a long-term shift in inflation or fiscal policy will force Treasury yields much higher and is willing to hold TBF for months or years on that conviction.
Daily reset: the math that matters for long holding
TBF uses daily rebalancing to maintain its 1-to-1 inverse relationship. Each day at the close, if the Treasury index is up, the fund sells some futures to re-establish the short position; if the index is down, it buys futures back. This machinery works flawlessly if you hold TBF for one day. But over longer periods — weeks, months, years — the daily resets create a subtle drag called “volatility decay,” which applies to all leveraged and inverse ETFs.
Here is the mechanics: suppose the Treasury index rises and falls around a flat average — up 5 percent on Monday, down 5 percent on Tuesday. The index ends where it started. But TBF, resetting daily, falls 5 percent Monday (losing on the up move) and gains 5 percent Tuesday (gaining on the down move). The gain on Tuesday is a 5 percent gain on a smaller base, so it does not fully offset Monday’s loss. After two days, TBF has lost money even though the index is flat. In choppy markets, that effect compounds.
This is not a defect — it is the price of daily rebalancing. Anyone holding TBF for more than days or a couple of weeks should expect to lose money to volatility decay if the Treasury market swings around without a clear direction. This is why TBF is a tactical tool, not a long-term portfolio holding.
Expense ratio and liquidity
TBF trades on the stock exchange like any ETF and is quite liquid — daily volume is high, and the bid-ask spread is tight. The expense ratio is modest, typically in the 0.4–0.6 percent annual range, which is reasonable for a fund that must roll futures and manage daily resets. However, that cost is small compared to the daily volatility decay that matters more to your actual return.
The real risks
The most obvious risk is directional: if Treasury yields fall (prices rise), TBF loses money directly. That can happen sharply: a strong flight-to-safety rally or a sudden shift in Fed sentiment can send long Treasury prices up 5–10 percent in days, which means TBF could fall 5–10 percent just as fast. That makes TBF unsuitable for anyone uncomfortable with big daily swings.
The second risk is that inverse logic can be confusing at moments of stress. In a severe financial crisis, Treasury prices often rise (a flight to safety) even as stocks and credit markets crash. An investor holding TBF to “hedge the stock market” might wake up discovering that both sides of the portfolio fell together — the stock hedge (TBF) lost money because Treasuries rallied during the crisis.
The third risk is duration-matching. The Treasury 20+ Year Index has a long duration, meaning its price swings are large. Over a year, if Treasury yields meander without a clear trend, TBF will likely underperform its simple 1-to-1 inverse math would suggest.
How to research TBF
Read the ProShares fact sheet and prospectus, which disclose the exact replication method (it is futures-based, not a swap), the daily reset mechanics, and the historical performance over different time horizons — especially performance over rolling 3-month, 6-month, and annual periods compared to the underlying Treasury index inverted. Look at the fund’s 5-year price chart and compare it to the inverted 20+ Year Treasury Index performance; volatility decay is visible in the gap. Finally, if you are considering TBF as a hedge, run a scenario test: if your core portfolio would fall 20 percent in a recession, what would happen to TBF in that same scenario? The Treasury rally that would hurt TBF suggests it is not the hedge you want.
