ProShares UltraShort Semiconductors (SSG)
SSG (ProShares UltraShort Semiconductors) is an exchange-traded fund that amplifies losses in the semiconductor sector. Specifically, it is designed to move twice as far as the daily performance of the Dow Jones US Semiconductors index moves in the opposite direction. If the semiconductor sector falls 2% in a day, SSG aims to rise roughly 4%; if semiconductors rise 2%, SSG should fall roughly 4%. It is a tactical tool for short-term hedging or directional bets, not a buy-and-hold investment.
Why inverse and leveraged?
Semiconductor stocks are economically sensitive and often volatile. During a downturn, investors holding chip stocks suffer losses. An inverse ETF lets an investor profit from that scenario without needing to short individual stocks or navigate the complexity of borrowing shares. Leverage amplifies the bet: a 1x inverse ETF would simply rise when semiconductors fall, but a 2x inverse ETF amplifies that movement.
SSG appeals to investors who believe semiconductors are overvalued or vulnerable and want to hedge a separate long tech portfolio, or to tactical traders who think chip stocks will decline over the next few days or weeks.
The daily reset trap
Leveraged and inverse ETFs are designed to reset daily. That is, they aim to deliver their stated multiple of the index’s daily return each trading day. They are not designed to match the multi-day or multi-month return of the index; they are built for one-day holding periods, or for trades that last hours.
Here is the critical issue: if the semiconductor index rises 5% on day one and then falls 5% on day two — returning to its starting point — a 1x inverse semiconductor ETF should theoretically also end where it started. Instead, it will typically be slightly lower, because of compounding and the mathematics of daily resets. A 2x inverse ETF will lose far more to this effect, sometimes called volatility decay or daily decay.
This happens because leverage magnifies gains and losses unequally. Suppose semiconductors rise 10% (SSG down 20%) and then fall 10% (SSG up 20%). The semiconductor index ends unchanged, but SSG has lost value because the 20% gain is applied to a smaller amount after the initial 20% loss.
Who uses it and when
SSG is a tactical tool. A portfolio manager might buy it for a few days as a hedge during a period of extreme concern about chip-sector valuations or earnings. A trader convinced semiconductors will fall 15% over the next week might use it for that specific bet, accepting the daily decay risk because the large expected move exceeds the decay drag.
It is emphatically not a buy-and-hold investment, and it is not suitable for long-term investing. An investor who buys SSG expecting a permanent decline in semiconductors over months will almost certainly underperform simply owning an inverse (1x) semiconductor ETF or shorting individual stocks, because the daily leverage decay will erode value continuously.
Retail investors should be cautious about using leveraged ETFs at all without a specific short-term thesis and a plan to exit. Many brokers require special accounts or additional disclosures for buying inverse funds, and some retirement accounts prohibit them entirely.
Cost and liquidity
SSG trades on a major exchange with reasonable liquidity during normal market hours. Its expense ratio is higher than most passive ETFs — typically around 0.95% annually — reflecting the cost of maintaining the daily leverage and the hedging the issuer must do.
Bid-ask spreads are usually tight, a few cents on either side, so a trader can enter and exit quickly without paying excessive transaction costs relative to what they invest.
How to research inverse leveraged ETFs
Before using SSG, understand how daily compounding works. ProShares publishes detailed educational materials on inverse ETFs explaining the daily-reset mechanics, complete with historical examples showing how volatility decay erodes value over time. Reading these materials honestly — not just browsing them — is essential.
Check the fund’s fact sheet for the current underlying holdings (the top 20 or 30 semiconductor stocks the index includes) and their weights. Look at the historical performance of SSG versus simple inverse strategies to see how much daily decay has actually cost investors.
Consider whether a simpler alternative — a put option on a semiconductor-index ETF, or a short position in a broad semiconductor ETF — might serve your hedging or directional goal more efficiently.
Finally, commit to an exit plan before buying SSG. A trade lasting more than a few weeks almost certainly loses to decay, and the fund is a poor choice for ever owning as part of a permanent portfolio.
