Leverage Shares 2X Long RTX Daily ETF (RTXG)

RTXG is a leveraged exchange-traded fund issued by Leverage Shares that holds shares of Raytheon Technologies and uses borrowing to amplify returns. The fund aims to deliver twice the daily percentage change of RTX stock — if RTX rises 1 percent in a day, RTXG aims to rise 2 percent. Conversely, if RTX falls 1 percent, RTXG aims to fall 2 percent. This amplification is achieved through the use of leverage — the fund borrows money to buy additional RTX shares beyond what shareholder capital alone would allow. The amplified exposure comes at a cost: the fund must pay interest on borrowed capital, rebalance daily to maintain its two-to-one leverage ratio, and suffers from a phenomenon called volatility decay in markets where prices move sharply but end up near their starting point.

How leverage works

RTXG buys RTX shares and borrows cash against those holdings, using the borrowed money to buy more RTX. If the fund has 100 million dollars in shareholder capital, it might borrow 100 million more and use it to buy an additional 100 million dollars of RTX shares, resulting in 200 million dollars of RTX exposure financed by 100 million in capital and 100 million in debt. When RTX rises, the entire 200 million in holdings gains, but only 100 million belongs to the fund shareholders — the other 100 million is debt that must be repaid, so the net gain to shareholders is amplified. Conversely, when RTX falls, the losses are amplified because the fund still owes back the borrowed money.

The leverage is maintained via daily rebalancing. Each trading day, the fund rebalances to ensure that the ratio of RTX holdings to shareholder equity remains close to 2:1. If RTX has risen and the fund now holds more than 2 dollars of RTX per dollar of equity, the fund sells some RTX and uses the proceeds to pay down borrowed money. If RTX has fallen and the fund now holds less than 2 dollars of RTX per dollar of equity, the fund borrows more and buys more RTX. This daily rebalancing keeps the leverage consistent.

Volatility decay and why it matters

The daily rebalancing and leverage create a mathematical drag that erodes returns in volatile markets even if the stock ultimately goes nowhere. Suppose RTX opens at 100 dollars, rises to 102 dollars (a 2 percent gain), then falls back to 100 dollars on the next day. Over the two days, RTX has delivered a zero percent return — investors who bought and held broke even. RTXG, by contrast, would have been up 4 percent on day one (2 times the 2 percent RTX gain) and then would have rebalanced at the close, reducing its RTX holdings to maintain its 2:1 leverage. On day two, when RTX falls 2 percent, RTXG would fall 4 percent from its rebalanced position — so it would end the two-day period down roughly 0.2 percent even though RTX was flat. That erosion is volatility decay, and it is a fundamental cost of maintaining constant leverage in a moving market.

This decay becomes severe in high-volatility or sideways markets. If a stock bounces up and down daily but never trends, a leveraged fund on that stock will steadily lose value. Over longer periods — weeks, months, or years — the decay typically becomes very large, and leveraged single-stock ETFs often underperform or even go to zero despite the underlying stock rising. This is why these funds are explicitly marketed for short-term trading only, not long-term holding.

Who this fund is for and its costs

RTXG is designed for active traders making a short-term directional bet on RTX. An investor who believes RTX will rise sharply over the next few days or weeks might use RTXG to amplify that directional exposure without having to use margin on a brokerage account. The fund’s expense ratio covers Leverage Shares’ costs of managing the fund and paying the interest on borrowed capital. Because the fund rebalances daily, it incurs trading costs that are passed through to shareholders.

This is emphatically not a fund for long-term investors. The volatility decay means that holding RTXG for months or years is very likely to result in significant underperformance relative to owning RTX shares outright, even if RTX rises, because the costs and rebalancing drag will erode the extra gains the leverage was supposed to provide. Financial advisors typically recommend against recommending leveraged ETFs to retail clients precisely because the time horizon mismatch and hidden decay costs are so easily misunderstood.

Risks: leverage, decay, and counterparty

The primary risk in RTXG is volatility decay, which eats into returns whenever markets move but do not trend. A second risk is the interest cost of borrowing. The fund must pay interest on its borrowed capital, and if interest rates rise, that cost increases, further dragging on returns. A third risk is concentration: the fund holds nothing but RTX, so any company-specific problem with Raytheon will drive losses.

A final risk is counterparty and structural. Leverage Shares is a specialized provider of these products, and the mechanisms by which the fund maintains leverage may involve derivatives or financing agreements that carry their own risks. In extreme market stress, it is theoretically possible for a leveraged fund to be unable to maintain its leverage or to suffer unexpected costs that hit shareholders. These risks are rare but non-zero for specialized products.

How to research leveraged single-stock ETFs

Read the fund prospectus carefully, which lays out the leverage mechanism, the daily rebalancing rule, and the cost structure. Understand what your holding period is. If you are holding for more than a few weeks, the volatility decay and borrowing costs almost certainly make this fund unsuitable; owning RTX shares or using margin on a brokerage account would be more efficient. Compare the fund performance to 2X RTX returns over a few-day and few-week period to see the decay effect in action. Track the fund’s expense ratio and whether Leverage Shares discloses the interest rate being paid on borrowed capital. For traders considering RTXG, the question is not whether this is a good long-term holding — it is not — but whether the amplified short-term exposure justifies the costs and complexity relative to alternatives like margin trading or options.
