The Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight Technology ETF (RSPT) holds the entire technology sector of the S&P 500 — from trillion-dollar chip and software titans to $10 billion semiconductor specialists and cloud-infrastructure companies — and weights every holding at exactly the same portfolio percentage, regardless of its market capitalization.

That implicit thesis shapes everything about RSPT. In a market-cap-weighted index, the five largest technology companies — which include the most valuable corporations on Earth — would command perhaps 30% to 40% of a tech allocation. Equal weighting erases that concentration entirely. Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Tesla, and Alphabet would each claim roughly the same 1% to 2% of the fund as a $5 billion semiconductor design firm or a mid-sized cybersecurity software maker. This mechanically turbocharges exposure to smaller-cap tech and creates a radically different risk profile than holding technology through a traditional market-cap index.
Technology is the most-volatile sector in the S&P 500. Tech stocks swing wildly on earnings beats and misses, competitive surprises, and shifts in how investors value growth. The sector’s smaller companies are more volatile still: a niche software firm or specialized chip designer can double or halve on a single catalyst. Equal weighting amplifies this volatility by forcing the fund to hold dozens of smaller, more-unpredictable names instead of anchoring the portfolio to the stability of the tech megacaps. This is the trade-off: potentially higher returns if smaller tech companies outperform the giants, but meaningfully higher portfolio swings along the way.
What equal weighting in tech requires mechanically
The rebalancing discipline is relentless. As some tech holdings shoot higher — a semiconductor company announces a breakthrough, its stock doubles — the equal-weight portfolio must sell a portion of that winner to maintain its equal-weight structure, trimming back and reinvesting the proceeds into laggards. This selling into strength is a contrarian mechanic. If mean reversion exists in tech stocks — if fast growers eventually slow down and slower firms eventually accelerate — equal weighting captures that reversal. But if the fast growers keep growing faster, equal weighting’s forced selling extracts a performance penalty, a steady drag that compounds over years.
The rebalancing costs money. Transaction costs, bid-ask spreads on less-liquid smaller holdings, and the tax implications of forced sales (in taxable accounts) all subtract from returns. RSPT’s expense ratio reflects these frictions and is higher than a passively managed, low-turnover market-cap-weighted tech fund. Over long periods, the expense drag plus the rebalancing penalty often exceeds any outperformance from smaller companies’ faster growth, which is why equal-weight technology has underperformed traditional tech indices in many recent periods.
The technology sector’s composition and growth rates
Technology in the S&P 500 includes semiconductors and chip designers, software companies (from security to enterprise resource planning to cloud infrastructure), data-processing services, semiconductor equipment makers, and more. Each segment has different growth prospects and competitive dynamics. Semiconductors are capital-intensive, have high stakes in geopolitics, and benefit from secular tailwinds in artificial intelligence and data centers, but face brutal overcapacity cycles. Software typically grows faster, compounds on recurring subscriptions, and carries higher margins. Hardware — phones, personal computers, gaming devices — is mature and growth-constrained.
RSPT captures this entire heterogeneous mix in equal proportions. In a roaring bull market for artificial intelligence, if one semiconductor or AI-software company surges and another stagnates, equal weighting will buy the loser and trim the winner, potentially missing the maximum gains from sector rotation. Conversely, if the market becomes exuberant about one segment and overvalues it, equal weighting’s forced trimming of the hot names and buying of the cold names may protect against the worst of a drawdown when exuberance reverses.
The growth premium and growth-value cycles
Technology has captured an enormous premium over value stocks in recent decades, particularly since 2010. Investors have been willing to pay steep multiples for growth because tech companies compound earnings at 15% to 30% annually, compared to 2% to 5% for value stocks. This premium means that owning tech has been extraordinarily profitable. Equal weighting captures that premium as much as any tech strategy, but it distributes the bet more thinly across smaller, less-proven businesses. If the growth premium persists, RSPT captures the return; if growth suddenly falls out of favor and value outperforms, RSPT suffers because it is still technology-heavy, just diversified within the sector.
The fund also embeds a small-cap tilt. Historically, smaller stocks have outperformed larger ones over long periods, though this edge has been far less reliable in recent years. RSPT is therefore a bet on three confluent ideas: (1) technology will keep compounding; (2) smaller-cap tech firms will grow faster than the giants; and (3) mean reversion exists (equal weighting’s rebalancing captures it). All three have been questioned in recent market environments, which is why equal-weight tech has lagged both the broad market and market-cap-weighted tech indices in the 2020s.
Practical questions for an investor
Before buying RSPT, an investor should ask: Do I believe smaller technology companies will outperform the giants over my investment horizon? Am I comfortable with high volatility? Am I holding this in a tax-deferred account (to avoid capital-gains drag from rebalancing) or a taxable account? Can I stick with this fund through periods when it significantly underperforms the Nasdaq 100 or a market-cap-weighted tech ETF?
Compare RSPT’s returns over rolling three, five, and ten-year periods against a market-cap-weighted tech index and against the broad market. A persistent outperformance justifies the added expense and volatility; a consistent lag suggests that equal weighting is not adding value in the technology sector. Monitor the fund’s largest holdings in its prospectus to verify that equal weighting is genuinely equal (not drifted into a few large positions over time). For most investors, a simpler, cheaper, market-cap-weighted technology fund or a broad diversified equity fund may be a more rational choice than RSPT’s specific bet on small-cap tech outperformance.
