The VanEck Rare Earth and Strategic Metals ETF (ticker REMX) holds shares in mining companies and processors that extract and refine rare earth elements and other metals deemed strategically important—cobalt, lithium, nickel, tungsten, and the rare earth family itself. These materials are inputs to everything from smartphones and electric-vehicle batteries to military systems and wind turbines, making their supply chain a flashpoint in geopolitics and technology competition.

Rare earths: why they matter and why they are scarce

Rare earth elements are a set of 17 chemically similar metals from the periodic table—cerium, neodymium, dysprosium, terbium, and others—that have unique magnetic, luminescent, and catalytic properties. They are not actually rare in abundance, but they are rare in the places where mining is economical, which makes their supply inherently constrained. A single smartphone contains tiny amounts of multiple rare earths; modern wind turbines use kilograms of neodymium in their generators; military radar and guidance systems depend on them.

For decades, China controlled the rare earth supply chain through dominance in mining and processing, which gave Beijing significant leverage. When China restricted exports in the 2000s, the world woke up to a vulnerability. Today, the United States, European Union, and other allied nations have made rare earth supply security a strategic priority, spurring investment in new mines, processing capacity, and recycling.

REMX captures this entire supply ecosystem. Its holdings include integrated miners that extract rare earths from the ground, smaller junior explorers drilling for new deposits, and processing companies that refine raw ore into usable materials. Some positions are pure-play rare earth companies; others are diversified miners that produce cobalt, lithium, nickel, or tungsten alongside rare earths.

Lithium, cobalt, and battery materials

While rare earth metals get the geopolitical spotlight, battery metals are economically larger. Lithium and cobalt are essential to the rechargeable batteries powering electric vehicles and grid storage. As the world transitions away from fossil fuels, demand for lithium has exploded—electric vehicles use 50 to 100 kilograms of lithium compounds per car, and growth in EV sales has been steep.

Cobalt is similarly critical, though its supply chain is even more concentrated and politically fraught; much cobalt production comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where labor practices and political risk create volatility. Nickel and manganese are emerging as important secondary materials as battery chemistries evolve to reduce cobalt and lithium per unit of energy stored.

REMX’s holdings include major lithium producers operating in Australia, Chile, and Argentina, cobalt miners in Africa and Russia, and nickel producers concentrated in Indonesia and the Philippines. This geographic concentration creates a second layer of risk: political instability, environmental regulations, or export restrictions in any of these regions can cascade through the supply chain.

The commodities cycle and mining company volatility

Unlike most other ETFs, REMX’s returns are tightly linked to commodity prices. When lithium prices spike due to strong EV demand or supply interruptions, the miners in the fund’s portfolio see margins widen and stock prices surge. When a new mine comes online and prices collapse, or when a recession slows EV adoption, those same companies can see their stocks cut in half.

This volatility is structural to mining. Miners have high fixed costs (equipment, processing plants, staff) that do not shrink when commodity prices fall, so their earnings are highly leveraged to price swings. A 20% drop in lithium prices might translate to a 50% drop in a lithium miner’s earnings. Junior explorers—smaller companies looking for new deposits—have even higher volatility; if a proposed mine fails to prove out, the stock can become worthless.

Management quality and cost discipline matter enormously in mining. The best operators maintain profitability even during downturns by managing costs ruthlessly, while poorly run companies can burn through cash. REMX’s passive approach captures both types, so investors must examine the fund’s individual positions to gauge the health of its mining operations.

Supply-chain dependency and geopolitical risk

One of REMX’s defining risks is geopolitical concentration. China’s dominance in rare earth processing remains substantial despite efforts by other nations to build capacity. Indonesia and the Philippines account for a large share of global nickel supply. Lithium and cobalt depend on stable mining in countries that are sometimes politically unstable or have restrictive environmental or labor regulations.

Trade tensions between the United States and China, sanctions on Russia, and disputes over mining rights in Africa can all ripple through the fund’s holdings. For instance, if the U.S. government imposed tariffs on Chinese-processed rare earths, the cost of rare earth materials would spike, damaging manufacturers but benefiting REMX’s mining companies—a classic trade-off that makes the fund’s value difficult to predict.

Environmental and social concerns also loom large. Mining rare earths and producing batteries involve toxic processes and water-intensive refining. Countries tightening environmental regulations or indigenous communities asserting land rights can shut down mines or force costly cleanups. REMX investors are exposed to litigation risk, permitting delays, and reputational pressure on the companies in the fund’s portfolio.

How to research REMX before investing

Start with VanEck’s factsheet and prospectus, which detail the index methodology and holdings. The index typically includes the largest publicly traded rare earth miners (like Lynas Rare Earths, Neo Performance Materials) and battery-metal producers (like Albemarle, SQM, Ganfeng Lithium). Cross-reference these holdings against their latest quarterly earnings reports and investor presentations to understand the current state of their operations, production volumes, and cost bases.

Monitor commodity prices directly. The London Metal Exchange quotes real-time prices for cobalt, nickel, and lithium; track these as an early signal of where REMX’s underlying earnings are headed. When battery metal prices are at historical highs, the fund’s companies are at peak profitability and valuations risk compression if prices fall.

Read the annual 10-K filings of at least three major holdings to understand their production footprints, reserve lives (how many years of production remain at current depletion rates), capital expenditure requirements, and debt levels. A miner nearing the end of its reserves, lacking capital to develop new ones, is a value trap even if it appears cheap.

Finally, assess your time horizon and volatility tolerance. REMX can swing 15–30% in a single year in response to commodity cycles. It is best held by investors who can wait out downturns and who understand that geopolitical shocks to supply—or demand destruction from a recession—can quickly shift the value proposition.
