Without the reset, inverse ETFs suffer a mathematical headwind called volatility decay. Here is why: suppose you own an inverse fund and the market goes up 5%, then down 5%. An investor in the regular S&P 500 ends up with a loss (because 5% loss is applied to the smaller amount after the 5% gain). Similarly, the inverse fund’s gains on the down move are applied to a smaller base (because of losses on the up move), resulting in a net negative return. In choppy markets with swings in both directions, the inverse fund slowly bleeds value, even if the market finishes where it started.

The quarterly reset cuts this problem. Every three months, QBER closes its positions, locks in any gains or losses realised to that point, and rebuilds from fresh. This resets the leverage clock and prevents the slow decay. It also means QBER works best for investors with a specific three-month outlook — those who believe the market will be down in the next 90 days — rather than long-term holders.

How this fund works in practice

An investor using QBER must accept its quarterly rhythm. If you buy the fund and the market immediately rallies, your position loses money (because inverse funds fall when the market rises). Hold for a quarter, and at the end of September (if you bought in July), the fund resets and your basis resets too. A new three-month window opens. The critical risks

QBER is not a long-term holding. Over months or years, volatility decay and the quarterly reset mechanics mean it will not reliably deliver the inverse return you might expect. If you buy QBER and the market climbs steadily over 12 months, QBER will have lost money even though each quarter’s reset meant no single quarter went down. The resets do not eliminate the fundamental issue: inverse funds penalise you for every up day.

The second risk is misuse. QBER is a tactical hedge, not an alternative to diversification. An investor tempted to use QBER to bet against the market itself — rather than to hedge a portfolio they actually own — is essentially making a timed market call. Timing the market is notoriously difficult. If you buy QBER expecting a crash that never comes, you will simply bleed time decay until the fund resets.

There is also the risk of basis risk: the fund attempts to track the S&P 500 inverse, but derivatives do not perfectly mirror the index, costs accumulate, and market frictions introduce slippage. In a rapid, chaotic market move, QBER might not behave exactly as expected.

Finally, hedging costs money. A portfolio with QBER has one extra drag — the fund’s expense ratio and trading costs — that a portfolio without the hedge avoids. QBER makes sense only if the investor genuinely believes a decline is likely within the next three months and wants insurance. If the market instead rises steadily, QBER becomes a pure loss.
