Pacer Nasdaq International Patent Leaders ETF (PATN)
The Pacer Nasdaq International Patent Leaders ETF (PATN) tracks the 100 companies outside the United States with the most valuable patent portfolios, selected from the Nasdaq Global Ex-US Large Mid Cap universe. Launched in September 2024, the fund offers a systematic way for investors to gain exposure to innovation and intangible assets in developed markets outside America.
Patent valuation as an investment screen
PATN’s defining feature is its reliance on patent portfolios as the primary screen for selecting its holdings. Rather than tracking all companies in the Nasdaq Global Ex-US Large Mid Cap Index equally, or selecting by sector or valuation metrics, the fund applies a patent-value methodology to identify the 100 firms with the most commercially valuable intellectual property. Holdings are then weighted by market capitalization, so larger companies within the patent-leader cohort have proportionally larger positions in the fund.
This approach rests on the hypothesis that patent intensity and portfolio value are meaningful signals of future competitive advantage and business durability. Companies that invest heavily in research and development and accumulate valuable patent positions often operate in faster-growing or more defensible markets. They typically compete on innovation rather than price, and their intellectual property acts as a moat against competitors. PATN’s design captures this by systematically tilting toward those firms.
The fund’s largest holdings typically include global technology and industrial champions such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, ASML, Tencent, Samsung, and Novo Nordisk. These companies generate substantial revenue from patented technologies, from semiconductor manufacturing to drug discovery to industrial equipment. Their presence in PATN reflects both their large market values and their robust patent positions.
Sector and geographic composition
Because patents matter most in technology, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing, PATN naturally carries a sector tilt toward those areas. This is a natural consequence of the fund’s methodology rather than an arbitrary choice, but it does mean investors in PATN are making an implicit bet that innovation-heavy sectors will outperform the broader market. A sustained weakness in technology stocks or pharmaceutical companies would weigh on the fund more heavily than on a diversified international index.
Geographically, PATN provides exposure to developed-market innovation centres across Europe, Asia, and other regions with strong intellectual property frameworks and large technology sectors. This geographic diversity is one of the fund’s strengths, reducing concentration in any single country or currency. However, investors should be aware that holding non-US stocks introduces currency risk; fluctuations between the US dollar and the euro, Swiss franc, yuan, Japanese yen, and other currencies will affect returns for dollar-based investors.
Costs and practical considerations
PATN’s expense ratio of around 0.65 percent annually is modest by specialized-fund standards but higher than ultra-low-cost international index funds tracking traditional benchmarks. That difference reflects the custom index methodology and the ongoing work required to identify and weight companies by patent value. The fund trades on the Nasdaq with reasonable liquidity, though as a relatively new product it may have wider bid-ask spreads than deeply established peers.
The fund’s patent-screening methodology creates both an opportunity and a risk. If patent intensity proves to be a reliable indicator of outperformance, PATN captures that alpha. If, conversely, the signal weakens or becomes crowded, the fund could underperform cheaper alternatives. Prospective investors should review the fund’s prospectus and fact sheet to understand the exact patent-valuation model and how it is applied each period, and should monitor the fund’s top holdings and composition over time to assess whether the patent-leader thesis continues to hold practical merit.
