Nyxoah is a Belgian medical-device company with one product: Genio, an implant about the size of a pacemaker that sits under the skin and sends small electrical pulses to the muscles in your airway when you are asleep. The idea is simple. Obstructive sleep apnea happens when muscles in the throat relax and block breathing. If you send the right electrical signal at the right time, those muscles stay open. How Genio works

The technology rests on a well-understood principle: electrical stimulation of the right nerve can activate muscles. The challenge is identifying the right target (which nerve) and the right timing (when to deliver the pulse during the sleep cycle) and the right intensity (strong enough to work but not so strong it wakes you up or causes pain).

Nyxoah settled on hypoglossal nerve stimulation. The hypoglossal nerve runs from your brain down the side of your neck and controls the tongue and muscles in the upper airway. When you stimulate it, those muscles contract and stiffen, keeping the airway open.

Genio is small—roughly the size of a cardiac pacemaker—and uses similar implant technology. The device sits under the collarbone. A thin wire runs to the hypoglossal nerve. At night, a sensor detects your respiratory effort (the machine can tell you are trying to breathe but your airway is blocked). When that happens, Genio delivers a timed electrical pulse that makes the airway muscles contract. Problem solved. You breathe freely.

The device has a rechargeable battery and is programmed via an external remote. A doctor implants it under light sedation, a procedure that takes a couple of hours. Recovery takes a few weeks.
