But reverse the order: if NVIDIA falls first, then rises, the daily reset damage outweighs the gain.
In choppy sideways markets, this decay is severe. A stock that oscillates up and down around a flat trend will erode NVDX’s value each cycle because leverage magnifies the losses on down days and then the rebalancing resets to a lower base before the next up day. If NVIDIA gaps down 4% on bad news before the market opens, NVDX gaps down about 8%, and a trader holding the position through the gap sees an instant large loss. There is no daily reset that day — the loss is locked in before the market even opens.

The psychological pressure of seeing 2x losses instead of 1x losses forces many retail traders to exit at the worst times. Buying NVIDIA stock on margin through a brokerage account provides true 2x leverage at a lower cost (just the margin interest rate, no fund fee), but it requires setting up margin borrowing and managing the account actively. Buying deep out-of-the-money NVIDIA call options provides leveraged upside, but requires more capital and complex timing. NVDX is the middle ground: simpler and more transparent than margin, cheaper and less complex than options, but with the drag and decay built into the daily-reset structure.
