What does it mean for an ETF to be “inverse”?

The “2x” means the fund amplifies that inverse movement — a 1% NVIDIA decline targets a 2% NVDQ gain. How does the daily reset problem hurt returns?
Here is where NVDQ’s mathematics become treacherous. If NVIDIA rises the next day and NVDQ falls, the fund rebalances again. This effect worsens in choppy markets. Imagine NVIDIA oscillates: rises 2%, falls 1%, rises 2%, falls 1%. The cumulative change is close to zero. But NVDQ, resetting each day, suffers small losses on each oscillation as leverage is rebalanced at ever-changing prices. If NVIDIA ends the month flat, NVDQ will typically be down, not flat. The longer you hold an inverse leveraged ETF without a clear directional move, the more you lose to this drag.
Over days and weeks, this decay is manageable; someone with a strong thesis that NVIDIA will fall sharply in the next few weeks might accept the drag as the cost of amplified exposure. Over months and years, the drag compounds into serious underperformance relative to the underlying move.
What are the risks of owning NVDQ?
The most obvious risk is wrong directional bet. If a trader owns NVDQ as a hedge but NVIDIA rallies instead of falling, the hedge loses money while the stock holdings gain — creating an opportunity cost and dragging on total returns.
More insidious is the leverage risk itself. NVDQ amplifies both small moves and large moves. In a sudden NVIDIA spike — a positive earnings surprise, a major contract win — NVDQ could gap down sharply, losing 3%, 4%, or more in a single session. Someone who owns NVDQ and needs to exit quickly may find themselves forced to sell at the worst prices.

How should someone use NVDQ?
NVDQ is a tactical short-term tool, not a long-term holding. If a trader believes NVIDIA will fall 10% or more in the next two to four weeks, NVDQ provides a 2x-leveraged way to profit. If the thesis plays out quickly, the fund can deliver meaningful gains before decay sets in.
Conversely, if someone holds NVIDIA stock and wants to hedge downside risk, NVDQ can be sized as a partial offset — perhaps owning $10,000 of NVDQ for every $50,000 of NVIDIA stock to cushion sharper falls without fully cancelling gains in a rally.
A trader should avoid buying NVDQ and holding it passively for months, expecting it to track twice the inverse of NVIDIA’s annual return — it will not. Instead, it is best used for specific windows when a strong move is expected. Entry and exit matter greatly because wide spreads and execution slippage can eat into gains.
