Commodity Price Dependency and Hedging Constraints

The Optionality Stack: Exploration, Asset Sales, M&A

Capital Efficiency in Exploration
Unlike an operating company measured by return on equity or operating margin, Meta is evaluated on capital efficiency in exploration—how much prospective resource the company can define per dollar spent, and how likely that resource is to eventually transition to a development or sale. This is partly science (ore grades, deposit size, mining costs) and partly luck (discovery) and timing (market conditions at the moment of sale).
A disciplined explorer may spend $50 million defining a 5-million-ton lithium deposit, then sell it for $300 million to a major miner—a 6x return on exploration capital. A poorly run explorer may spend $100 million and discover the deposit is too small or too deep to mine economically, yielding zero.
