KraneShares 2x Long BIDU Daily ETF (KBDU)
KraneShares 2x Long BIDU Daily ETF (KBDU) is a leveraged exchange-traded fund that pursues twice the daily percentage movement of Baidu Inc. stock. Launched in 2025 as part of KraneShares’ expansion into single-stock leveraged products, KBDU serves tactical traders betting on Baidu’s near-term price movements, not long-term holders.
From search engine to AI platform
Baidu began in 2000 as a search engine for Chinese-language web content, rapidly becoming the dominant search platform in China. For the first decade of operation, the company’s revenue came almost entirely from search advertising, the same model that powered Google in the West. Baidu went public on NASDAQ in 2005 under ticker BIDU, becoming one of the first major Chinese internet firms to list on a U.S. exchange.
The company diversified meaningfully over the following years. Maps, streaming video, cloud computing, and financial services all became material business lines. By the late 2010s, Baidu had shifted strategic emphasis toward artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles. The company launched Apollo, an autonomous-driving platform, and invested heavily in large language models and machine learning. This pivot positioned Baidu as a play on Chinese AI development rather than simply a search advertising company.
Baidu’s evolution as KraneShares entered the market
In the years between 2020 and 2025, Baidu’s stock price and investor narrative shifted repeatedly. Chinese regulatory pressure on technology companies, particularly on advertising and data practices, created headwinds. U.S.-China trade tensions raised uncertainty about listing longevity. Profitability from cloud computing and autonomous vehicles remained years away, if achievable at all. Yet the company also positioned itself as a leader in generative AI among Chinese firms, giving it a genuine long-term growth narrative.
KraneShares, an ETF issuer specializing in China-focused products, observed this dynamic and saw an opportunity. In 2025, as retail interest in leveraged single-stock ETFs grew, KraneShares launched a suite of 2x daily leveraged products tracking major Chinese technology companies. KBDU arrived as part of that rollout, alongside similar products tracking Alibaba and other names. The timing reflected both maturation of ETF infrastructure and increased appetite among U.S. traders for directional bets on Chinese tech.
How daily 2x leverage works
KBDU holds Baidu stock, swaps, and options in combination to deliver daily returns approximately double Baidu’s daily percentage change. If Baidu rises 1 per cent in a day, KBDU targets a 2 per cent rise. If Baidu falls 1 per cent, KBDU targets a 2 per cent fall.
The fund rebalances daily, resetting its derivative positions at market close. This daily reset is the mechanism that enables the 2x daily claim. It also creates a critical caveat: the fund does not aim to deliver twice Baidu’s multi-week or multi-month return. It aims to deliver twice the daily return, every single day.
Volatility decay: the long-term cost of daily leverage
When held over periods longer than one day, KBDU experiences volatility decay — the fund’s returns diverge from twice Baidu’s buy-and-hold return, particularly during volatile or choppy price action.
Consider a simple case: Baidu trades at $100 and rises 10 per cent to $110, then falls 10 per cent to $99. The underlying stock is down 1 per cent overall. KBDU, rebalancing daily at 2x, gains roughly 20 per cent on day one to $120, then loses roughly 20 per cent on day two, arriving at approximately $96. The leveraged fund ends down 4 per cent, roughly four times the underlying loss.
This is not a flaw; it is a mathematical property of daily rebalancing. The longer you hold KBDU, the more volatility decay erodes the fund’s value relative to simply holding BIDU and reinvesting. For investors with holding periods longer than a few days or weeks, an unlevered position in BIDU makes far more sense.
Baidu’s competitive and regulatory position
Baidu competes in cloud computing against larger, better-funded rivals like Alibaba and Tencent. Its autonomous-driving ambition faces both technical and regulatory challenges specific to China. Profitability in either business remains uncertain. The company also faces ongoing Chinese government oversight of technology firms, advertising practices, and data privacy — regulatory risk that can swing sentiment sharply.
These fundamental challenges affect KBDU directly. If Baidu faces regulatory setback or disappointing results in AI or autonomous vehicles, the 2x leverage amplifies the stock price decline. Conversely, positive developments are amplified upward.
Costs and the hidden drag
KBDU charges an expense ratio above that of unlevered equity ETFs, covering the cost of maintaining leverage infrastructure and executing daily rebalancing. These costs compound over time. Combined with volatility decay, they create a significant headwind against multi-week or multi-month holding periods.
The fund also carries concentration risk: the entire position depends on one company’s performance, with no diversification buffer. Leverage means a 50 per cent drop in BIDU results in approximately a 100 per cent loss in KBDU.
Who should use this fund
KBDU is strictly for experienced traders with a tactical view on Baidu over days or a few weeks. It is unsuitable for long-term buy-and-hold investors, retirement accounts, or anyone uncomfortable with the prospect of total loss. The combination of leverage, daily rebalancing mechanics, single-stock concentration, and Chinese regulatory risk creates a volatile, active-trading product.
If you are bullish on Baidu’s long-term AI and autonomous-vehicle prospects, a standard BIDU position is far simpler. If you are making a short-term directional bet on sharp moves, KBDU amplifies that exposure — but only if you hold for days, not weeks.
How to research the fund
Read the fund’s prospectus and factsheet, available from KraneShares. Monitor Baidu’s earnings calls, SEC filings, and investor relations materials to understand the company’s current trajectory in cloud, AI, and autonomous vehicles. Track news on Chinese technology regulation, which can shift sentiment sharply. Compare KBDU’s performance against two times daily BIDU returns over short periods to verify the fund is meeting its stated objective. Over longer periods, observe the cumulative effect of volatility decay by comparing KBDU’s total return against twice BIDU’s total return.
Understanding that KBDU is a tactical trading vehicle, not an investment vehicle, is essential before committing capital.
