PGIM S&P 500 Buffer 12 ETF (JULP)

JULP is a structured exchange-traded product that gives investors exposure to the S&P 500 with predetermined downside and upside limits, rebalancing each July. Instead of betting that the market will go up or down, this fund lets you buy the protection you want—knowing in advance what you gain or lose—for one calendar year at a time.

In traditional investing, you own the market and take whatever comes: a 40% bull year or a 30% bear year, the full ride. Buffer ETFs invert that premise. The issuer (PGIM, formerly Prudential Investment Management) uses options to carve out a slice of the market with bumpers. With JULP, those bumpers are set 12% below and some percentage above the index value at the start of the year.

How the buffer works

The mechanism is straightforward. When JULP launches or rolls (each July), the fund establishes a floor and ceiling around the S&P 500’s level at that moment. The 12% buffer means that if the index falls 12% or less within the year, the fund absorbs the entire loss and the shareholder loses nothing—or nearly nothing, after fees. If the market crashes 25%, the fund still shows a loss of only 12%, capped. That cushion comes from a collar: PGIM buys protective put options (to protect against losses beyond the buffer) and finances them by selling call options (capping gains). The buyer pays a net cost for this setup, reflected in a modest annual expense ratio.

Conversely, upside is capped. The exact level depends on pricing at each inception date, but a typical PGIM buffer product might cap gains somewhere in the 10–15% range. If the S&P 500 rises 20%, the shareholder’s JULP position rises to the preset cap—say 12.5%—and leaves the excess on the table.

When this matters most

Buffer ETFs appeal to a specific investor mindset: those who are reasonably confident that broad equity markets will rise over a decade but nervous about the next 12 months, or those who simply prefer the clarity of knowing the worst outcome before they buy. They are less useful for buy-and-hold investors over decades, because the annual reset and capped upside typically underperform a plain index fund in a rising market. They shine for people who:

  • Want downside insurance without buying separate put options and managing strike prices
  • Are willing to trade some upside for predictability
  • Plan to hold the fund for one contract year or to ladder multiple maturities
  • Are uncomfortable with the volatility profile of broad equity exposure

The annual structure matters. JULP rolls every July. If you hold past that date, you move into a new contract with freshly set levels. That reset means you get a new buffer and cap based on the market level at the roll date, which can be either favorable (if the market has fallen far) or unfavorable (if it has surged).

Costs and the math

JULP carries an expense ratio that reflects the cost of the protective options embedded in the strategy. This is higher than a plain S&P 500 index ETF but lower than buying protection separately. The expense ratio is paid whether markets rise, fall, or stay flat, so a year of sideways movement—where the cap never binds but the buffer never triggers—costs you the ratio without offsetting gains or losses.

The real cost is harder to quantify on paper: opportunity cost. In a roaring bull market, the capped upside leaves money on the table. In a quiet up year, the expense ratio is pure drag. You are paying for insurance whether you need it or not.

Liquidity and who uses these

JULP is part of PGIM’s family of dated buffer products. As an exchange-traded fund, it trades on an exchange (NASDAQ) with spreads and liquidity that depend on the fund’s assets under management and investor interest. Larger buffer ETFs have tighter spreads and easier entry and exit; smaller ones may have wider spreads, raising transaction costs.

These products are popular with financial advisors who use them to manage tail risk or to market investors who want a simpler alternative to building their own collars using options directly. They also appeal to tax-loss harvesting strategies within a portfolio because the defined structure lets an investor know when to lock in a loss at the predetermined floor.

Watching the data

To understand JULP’s performance, look at how it captures upside versus downside versus the S&P 500 over full contract years (July to July). The relevant question is not whether JULP beat the index in a given month but whether the buffer’s protection was worth its cost over the full period. Compare its annual return on years when the market fell sharply (the buffer should show much-smaller losses) against years when the market soared (JULP should lag because of the cap).

The prospectus and fact sheet, updated each year at inception, spell out the exact cap and floor levels for that contract year. Read those first, because the buffer amount and cap can shift based on volatility and option pricing at roll time. The underlying index is the S&P 500, and any broad market commentary about large-cap US equities applies: think about sector concentration, earnings growth, and valuation. JULP just adds structure to that exposure.
