What happened
Moderna (MRNA) stock rose about 7% on Monday to about $204 after investors piled in ahead of October 24 cancer vaccine data and its return to the Nasdaq-100 index. Moderna and partner Merck said in August that their personalized cancer therapy, given with Merck's Keytruda, helped melanoma patients go longer without their cancer returning than Keytruda alone. Full results will be shown at a medical conference in Madrid on October 24. The stock is up about 596% this year, giving Moderna a value of roughly $82 billion.
Why it matters
Moderna's stock has climbed about 596% in 2026, mostly on hopes that its personalized cancer therapy works, so the October 24 results could move the price sharply either way. Citigroup rates the shares "Sell" with an $80 target, far below today's price, saying the stock looks expensive for the sales expected. Index funds must also buy the stock when it rejoins the Nasdaq-100, which can add to the swings.
