What happened
Tesla (TSLA) stock rose 4.7% to $370.59 on Friday after the automaker's third-quarter deliveries beat Wall Street estimates, helped by a rebound in European demand. Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles from July to September, about 2% fewer than the 497,099 it delivered a year earlier, but 1.3% more than the previous quarter. Analysts had expected roughly 457,000 to 462,000 cars, depending on the source. Tesla built 464,391 cars, so it delivered about 22,000 more than it made, meaning it drew down cars sitting in stock.
Why it matters
Tesla's car sales are still slightly lower than a year ago, but the drop is small and the quarter beat what investors had expected after U.S. electric-car tax incentives ended. A rebound in Europe, where registrations rose by about two-thirds through August, did much of the work. Tesla reports full profit results on October 21, and some investors are watching its robotaxi and humanoid robot plans as closely as car sales.
