What happened
Jio Platforms (parent RELIANCE.NS) is expected to open India's biggest IPO on Wednesday, Oct. 21, seeking about $3.8B, with a listing on Oct. 28, as proceeds mainly repay debt. An IPO (initial public offering) is when a private company sells its shares to the public for the first time. About ₹27,500 crore of the money is meant to repay debt at its Jio Infocomm unit. That would beat Hyundai Motor India's $2.9 billion sale in 2024, the current record. The company has not formally confirmed dates; its final filing is expected the week of Oct. 12.
Why it matters
Jio Platforms is India's biggest mobile operator, with 506 million connections, so this sale lets ordinary investors own a piece of the network that carries much of the country's phone and internet traffic. Only about 2.9% of the company is being sold (per), but the size could soak up money other firms hoped to raise, since about 250 companies are waiting to list. Most proceeds pay down debt rather than fund growth.
